Much research has been done on communication - what is communication, what makes it effective, how to improve it, and many other aspects.  It is well known that words account for only a tiny fraction of what constitutes "communication."  Indeed, we only need look at the so-called lower animals to recognize that communication happens at every level.  Even plants communicate - with chemicals, odors, poisons, etc.

For communication to be effective, it must be congruent.  It is congruency of words, body language, tone and other factors which renders a message sent being received in essentially its intended meaning.  Recall your childhood game of chain letter: A message sent out at the beginning of the chain becomes totally discombobulated by the end of the chain.

It is important to realize that communication happens on an instinctive level much more than with words.  That's because the crux of communication occurs at the limbic level.

Consider lying.  Most people can tell when they are being lied to.  That is because there is an incongruity between the words spoken and other aspects of the communication.  The eyes may shift, or the physical demeanor may not "match," or the speed of the words delivered may be off.  Whatever the case, we instinctively know when something is amiss.
