Toastmasters International publishes a page at http://www.toastmasters.org/ToastmastersMagazine/ToastmasterArchive/2008/September2008/Departments/MannerofSpeaking.aspx that provides some excellent tips on how to proceed to become a paid speaker. Tips include giving freebies, and making them count; including the "Help Me" tidbit just before concluding any speech: "As you can see, I'm passionate about the topic. If you know of any organization that might benefit from hearing more, please give me your business card following my speech."
Also, developing a website as a marketing tool; polishing - or developing - your credibility through a solid resume of your accomplishments; hanging out with other pros; establishing your fee; and match, don't sell. See www.speakerlauncher.com.
